Every Day But Sunday

Description

A book on Mansfield's history by town historian Jenny Copleland.
This is a story of America when rugged individualism was in full swing. The nineteenth- century industrialist, whether he made soap, tacks, or plows, stamped his personality upon the small organization he controlled. Therefore, the story of this romantic age of industry is a story of individuals - of men who were rugged, shrewd, and daring.
The vast factories of today's cities are direct descendants – some people say degraded descendants - of the small-town industries of nineteenth- century New England.
The author has taken a typical New England town from the beginning to the close of the century and conjures up the ramshackle factories, the honest products, and the shrewd proprietors.
After watching the water wheels go round we are better prepared to understand the steam turbine of today; the change has been more in state of mind than in mechanics.

Included in Mansfield are early schools and churches, as well as many buildings that have burned or been demolished. Longtime residents of the community will remember the huge construction projects of the 1950s that created underpasses for the railroad to cross local streets. The faces of Mansfield's past are seen in these vintage images, highlighting the people who shaped the town's future and tracing the area's development as an impressive industrial base. All geographical areas are covered, including the South Common, the North End, Main Street, East and West Mansfield, and downtown. Discover the changes the town has endured over the years in this engaging collection of images complimented by an informative text.
Kevin McNatt is a member of the Mansfield Historical Society and was elected as its president in March 1998. Andrew Todesco, also a member of the Mansfield Historical Society, is a high school social studies teacher. Together the authors bring an affection for the memories of yesteryear to this well-crafted tribute to their hometown.
